This update is a massive one featuring a couple of major additions and reworks:
- The language update! As I am unfortunately not fluent in every language this is heavily under work and you can submit feedback via Feedback/Contact Us (at the bottom), I have implemented languages that I feel like is easy for my testers. Lessons are still in English and this is not planned to change because the amount of work that would take is so ridiculous I hate even thinking about it.
- The mobile update, as this is not publicly available yet but there is internal testing for the android app and after some tweaking and improvements it will eventually be available on the Android Play Store for all the android havers, iOS is also in my plans but that crap is expensive, I have to buy a Mac and maintaining an app on the Apple Store costs a lot of money yearly (why is Apple like this???). One thing to note is that dashboard updates will 90% of the time apply to mobile since the mobile app is a TWA and is basically a mobile port of the dashboard. App will now be used for Android App so I'm gonna have to name it the PC app Desktop on the changelog god.
- The study rework, I have gone through extensive effort to fully rework the studying section, I like to make focuses on specific areas of the platform as I have in older versions and now I am trying very hard to refine and improve the experience of studying for all levels of people learning Japanese, making it immersive and seamless while being able to work in tandem with other platforms like Renshuu, WaniKani and Anki (or even being able to import your progress from other platforms). You'll be seeing a lot of studying fixes and adjustments.
Additions:
Android:
- The translate button is now a tile in Quick Settings and you can long-press for shortcuts directly to Translate, Dictionary, Reviews & Study
Desktop:
- Song Lyrics now has a hotkey (can be checked and changed in Settings > Hotkeys)
- You can set the app language as well, it will restart pyontan and everything will be translated into the designated language
Dashboard:
- You can choose what language pyontan will automatically set for the translator as well as around the site.
Extension:
- Also has language support now for translations into your own language
Desktop + Dashboard:
- Grammar lessons have a whole new page design, make sure to check it out, a lot more information and notes are added as well as notes
- The grammar point is colored in every sentence example, Play All will read them one after another, you can toggle whether to see the Japanese/English and there's real life examples via Tatoeba available too
- There's no structure legends in lessons that explain how the lessons are structured, so on and so forth
- A stupid amount of lessons have been added (there's like 400+ now, there's a Reading tag for ones that aren't really used besides in Reading or formal settings, and kansai-ben slang)
Updated:
Desktop + Dashboard:
- Review ending stops a review partway and shows what you got right in what you answered, every answer counts as you gave it and the rest stay due (partial reviewing)
- Each item links to where it comes from (the lesson, the practice, counters, kana chart, etc)
- Reviews from lesson or practice your plan doesn't include or have access to (such as if you downgrade) will stay on pause, you'll be able to access it once you are subscribe again
- Placement tests no longer add your answers to your reviews or gauge a level so you can use it purely to test yourself
- Placement tests offer you a link to the content that you missed at the results screen
- Updates should ideally be harder to miss with a new home main menu check too
- The timer for studying can't be changed mid quiz and you can't switch the question sources anymore
Fixes:
Desktop:
- Wrapping of text on lessons with furigana on has been fixed, English words stay whole when a line wraps and this has been a lot of formatting horse crap
- App lessons with furigana above kanji no longer push a long sentence down the window
Extension:
- Based on a tester, the line no longer fails with "Connection aborted" when the connection had gone quiet, pyontan will try again and if it fails you are given plain words instead of a nasty error
Desktop + Dashboard:
- Furigana being incorrect in some lessons will actually now read correctly in context of the word like 二人 reading ふたり, and 一人 reading hitori
- Bigger answers in quizzes and placement tests so you can tell kana apart like ハ、バ、パ a bit better hopefully
- "Keep going" after a review shows in every language, not just English
- A grammar lessons score counts its real-sentence questions too (no more 6 of 3 right, this was part of the big rework and I messed up a line of code)
- Placement tests allow for marking content below your designated JLPT level as known without including the level you was designated at
Deleted:
- Old grammar lesson page (an explanation and 2 examples)
- Study switches for sentence sources, questions will just use all sources
- Furigana on the big title at the top of a lesson
